AAA Hay, Bradford County
John and Lisa Holtzendorf have been raising cattle and growing hay for twenty-five years, and during that time AAA Hay has been committed to environmental stewardship through practices that conserve natural resources, improve ecosystem health, and sustain long-term agricultural productivity. They implement Best Management Practices by using two rainwater-fed irrigation ponds and the establishment of buffer zones to limit runoff into surrounding areas.
AAA Hay also focuses on soil health through rotational grazing, cover crops, reduced tillage, and soil testing, which helps reduce erosion. They promote sustainability by integrating livestock with diverse crop production and maintaining wildlife habitats. Ponds provide refuge for fish and migratory birds, while crops like perennial peanut hay support livestock and wildlife. He also reduces waste through composting and repurposing byproducts as feed, while using solar energy to lower their carbon footprint.
AAA Hay continues to grow through innovation and adaptability. As a family-run farm, they take pride in involving the next generation and showing that sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand.
