ABOUT ALBIN HAGSTROM & SON, INC.

Albin Hagstrom & Son, Inc. has been in operation since the late 1920’s, when Mr. Albin Hagstrom began growing cut foliage in Volusia County. Today, four generations later, the Hagstrom family continues his legacy of operating a family business growing cut foliage for the floral industry with environmental stewardship as a top priority.

By implementing Best Management Practices (BMPs), the Hagstrom family has been able to accomplish their goals of managing water and nutrient use and protecting local water quality on each of their properties. Some of the most effective BMPs implemented include installing overhead wobblers for irrigating ferns as well as micro-jet irrigation for planted trees. On-site retention ponds gather water draining from the growing areas and recycle it by pumping it back over to other growing areas for further irrigation use.

BMPs, such as weather stations and soil moisture sensors, assist with decision-making for irrigation needs between rain events. By maintaining uniform coverage during irrigation events, they have noticed a reduction in fertilizer use since plants are receiving optimal amounts of water and applied nutrients. Soil and tissue sampling are completed on a regular basis to monitor nutrient uptake and prevent runoff from occurring. Areas around the properties sensitive to erosion are corrected and maintained as well. Lastly, wetlands are fenced off to protect water quality and to help native wildlife thrive undisturbed.

Florida Farm Bureau Federation is honored to award a 2019 CARES designation and sign to the multi-generational farm family of Albin Hagstrom & Son, Inc. for their dedication in being outstanding environmental stewards.
