C & M Cattle and Hay, Holmes County

Calvin and Marsha Sherrouse own and operate C & M Cattle and Hay in Bonifay, Florida. The 4th generation cattleman began raising cattle and producing hay in 2004, but has prior experience in row-crop farming and raising swine as well. C & M Cattle and Hay is a familyrun business with members of the family having an active role in the prosperity of the farm. C & M Cattle and Hay has implemented BMPs for several years. BMPs are a set of guidelines that advise producers on how to manage the water, nutrient, and pesticides they are using to reduce agriculture’s impact on the state’s natural resources. Some of the BMPs that have been implemented include GPS guided application of fertilizer, no-till drilling, watering stations and pasture aeration. Pasture aeration helps curb water shed, just as no-till drilling assists with minimizing erosion and maintains terraced land. It is practices like these that ensure their land will remain productive and viable for future generations. Sherrouse is involved in his community as an ordained minister for the past 25 years. He is also a proud member to the Calvary Baptist Church in Bonifay area. When asked why they think it is important to protect the environment, Sherrouse responded, “Our water and land are God’s loan to us all. We should all do what we can to care for it to the best of our ability. I would like for my children and grandchildren to have a part of this creation, just as I have, and to enjoy for years to come.”
