Demott Farm, Jefferson County

Herbert Demott and his family own and operate Demott Farm in Monticello, Florida. The Demott family has farmed in Jefferson County since the 1830’s. They proudly produce cattle and hay. The Demott family has been implementing Best Management Practices (BMPs) on the farm for decades. BMPs are a set of guidelines that advise producers on how to manage the water, nutrient, and pesticides they are using to reduce agriculture’s impact on the state’s natural resources. Demott Farm uses a rotational grazing system to improve pasture longevity, allow more timely utilization of forage and conserve surplus forage. GPS technology is used on the farm to precisely apply fertilizer and crop protection tools. The Demott family has fenced off natural wetlands to keep the cattle from disturbing them. Watering systems have been installed throughout the various pastures to supply a reliable source of drinking water for the cattle. The Demott family is actively involved in their local community. They are part of the local Kiwanis organization, Monticello Opera House and the American Legion. The Demotts are members of Florida Farm Bureau, Jefferson County Cattlemen’s Association and attend Elizabeth Baptist Church in Monticello. When asked why he is a farmer who CARES, Demott responded, “to keep our water and soil protected for future generations.”
