Franklin Farms, Holmes County
Joe and Pat Franklin own and operate Franklin farm in Holmes County, Florida. Originated in 1928, the farm operated as a crop and livestock production facility. Today, it produces Bermuda and Perennial peanut hay. Franklin Farm is a family-run business with all members of the family having an active role in the prosperity of the farm. Franklin Farm has implemented BMPs since the beginning. BMPs are a set of guidelines that advise producers on how to manage the water, nutrient, and pesticides they are using to reduce agriculture’s impact on the state’s natural resources. Some of the BMPs that have been implemented include GPS guided herbicide applications. Utilizing GPS guided applicators help indicate when and where to apply fertilizer and nutrients for optimal growth and efficient production. These practices ensure that their land will remain productive and viable for future generations. Franklin farm owners are involved in their community as Sunday school teachers, and Holmes County Farm Bureau and Holmes County Soil and Water Conservation board members. When asked why they believe it is important to protect our environment, Franklin responded, “We must be responsible of our resources, use them reasonably, and do what is necessary to ensure future production.”
