J & A Ranch
J & A Ranch has been in operation since 2016 when James started with cattle and sheep in Hamilton County. Since then, the family has expanded to also include free range chickens.
Together, the McBrayer family farms on 120 acres and implement a conservation program that is not only extensive but highly effective. Through implementing Best Management Practices (BMPs) on their operation, they accomplish their goals of reducing water, nutrient and chemical use, improving water quality and protecting surrounding wildlife habitats.
Some of their most effective BMPs have included over seeding Tiff 9 and Rye for fall growth. Purchasing a Brillion Till-N-Seed to enhance field quality with nitrogen enhancing ground crops, reduce disease and improve grass density. Cattle are rotated between fields to reduce accumulation of waste. Winter feeding of hay is located in multiple locations of each fenced field to reduce the additional accumulation of waste. No application of fertilizers have been applied. Water is used solely for irrigating water tanks in the five fenced fields. Soil enhancement is been done on J & A Ranch with nitrogen enhanced vegetation such as, crimson clover. As grass quality is improved domestic animals supplements, minerals and proteins will be reduced. The ranch is serviced with a 10.2 KW solar system. The system is capable of powering all ranch systems which includes powering the well for irrigating field reservoirs.
In regards to leadership, James has served as a member of the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association member before moving to Florida.
When they aren’t dedicating themselves to their livelihoods, the McBrayer family is very involved in their community. James is active in jail, prison and recovery ministries and his wife Amy teaches homeschool and is involved with the Second Harvest Food Distribution. Their daughter Abigail is also an active member in the local 4-H club. Florida Farm Bureau Federation is proud to award a 2018 CARES designation and sign to James and Nick Marshall for their dedication in being outstanding environmental stewards.
