Jimmy & Hilda Dixon Farm, Madison County
Jimmy and Hilda Dixon own and operate Jimmy and Hilda Dixon Farm in Madison, Florida. The farm has been in the family several decades and was started by Hilda’s parents and grandparents in the early 1900s. They proudly produce blueberries, hay, peas, rye and watermelons. Mr. Dixon has been implementing Best Management Practices (BMPs) on the farm since the early 1990’s. BMPs are a set of guidelines that advise producers on how to manage the water, nutrient, and pesticides they are using to reduce agriculture’s impact on the state’s natural resources. Jimmy and Hilda Dixon Farm practice a no tillage system to decrease soil erosion, conserve soil moisture and build the soils structure and health. Soil samples are taken yearly and are used to apply the correct amount of fertilizer and lime to the soil. Mr. and Mrs. Dixon are actively involved in their local community. They have supplied blueberries for the CARES recognition dinners since the program’s inception. During Mrs. Dixon’s spare time she enjoys quilting and crafts various quilts for the Madison community. Mr. Dixon and his wife attend First Methodist Church of Madison. When asked why he is a farmer who CARES, Dixon responded, “so our children and grandchildren can continue to enjoy the beauty of row crops, pastures, fine forests and wildlife.”
