Killam Farm Inc, Santa Rosa County
Lucas and Kendra Killam own and operate Killam Farm Inc in Santa Rosa County. The 3rd generation farmer proudly produces cotton, peanuts, and raises cattle. Killam Farm Inc has implemented BMPs several years before his participation in the program a year ago. BMPs are a set of guidelines that advise producers on how to manage the water, nutrient, and pesticides they are using to reduce agriculture’s impact on the state’s natural resources. Some of the BMPs that have been implemented include strip tilling, cross fencing, and GPS guided fertilizer application. Practices such as cross fencing or fencing of sensitive areas, allows for animal rotation and protection of waterbodies. These practices ensure that their land will remain productive and viable for future generations. Killam is actively involved in his community as a Santa Rosa County Farm Bureau Board Member, member on the Blackwater Soil and Water Conservation Board, and is the FFA Alumni President for the Jay Chapter. When asked what he enjoys most about farming, Killam responded, “Having a job that I truly love, is an amazing thing. Farming allows me an opportunity to be outside and not stuck at a desk all day.” Killam also enjoys the process of getting to watch his crops grow full circle from how they prepare the land to harvesting. He believes it important to protect our environment because it is his responsibility and the right thing to do as a farmer.
