Longino Ranch, Inc., Sarasota County

Cliff Coddington and his family own Longino Ranch, Inc. in Sidell, Florida. The ranch was purchased as a turpentine farm and later turned into a cattle ranch in the late 1930’s. They proudly produce cattle, citrus and timber. Longino Ranch, Inc. has been implementing Best Management Practices (BMPs) on the farm since 2011. BMPs are a set of guidelines that advise producers on how to manage the water, nutrient, and pesticides they are using to reduce agriculture’s impact on the state’s natural resources. Cliff Coddington practices a rotational grazing method that improves pasture longevity, allows for more timely utilization of forage and increases the stocking rates. Solar wells have also been installed to allow a reliable source of drinking water for the cattle and to keep the cattle from disturbing the natural wetlands. Microjets are used in the groves to minimize water losses due to evapotranspiration and wind drift. Soil and tissue samples are also taken to ensure the proper amount of nutrients and crop protection tools are applied to the pastures and groves. Mr. Coddington is actively involved in his local community. He has served on numerous boards such as the Manatee Cattlemen’s Association, Florida Cattlemen’s Association, Florida Beef Council and the Peace River Valley Citrus Growers Association. Mr. Coddington also allows tours of the land to local 4-H and FFA clubs for educational purposes. He and his family attend church regularly. When asked why he is a farmer who CARES, Mr. Coddington responded, “for future generations to come and farm it.”
