Miller Blueberry Plantation, Inc., Putnam County
Jimmy Miller and his family own and operate Miller Blueberry Plantation, Inc. in Interlachen, Florida. Mr. Miller started the farm in 1979 when he planted his first blueberries. Mr. Miller has been implementing Best Management Practices (BMPs) on the farm for 15 years now. BMPs are a set of guidelines that advise producers on how to manage the water, nutrient, and pesticides they are using to reduce agriculture’s impact on the state’s natural resources. Miller Blueberry Plantation installed a drip irrigation and fertigation method that uses a lower volume and pressure to conserve water. Mr. Miller has taken proactive steps to install soil moisture sensors to determine crop water use information and weather data pertinent to his farm. With this data he can more accurately apply fertilizer. Mr. Miller is actively involved in his local community. He is part of the Rotary Club, a Farm Bureau member and is involved with Habitat for Humanity. He is also a part of the Florida Blueberry Association and the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association. Mr. Miller and his family regularly attend church. When asked why he is a farmer who CARES, Miller responded, “we have to live in the environment. We need to preserve the environment for the future of our children.”
