ABOUT NIXON FARMS

Nixon Farms is a third-generation family farm that grows cotton, peanuts, wheat and soybeans on almost 700 acres in Okaloosa County. Nixon Farms is now under the care of Shannon Nixon, who is keeping the family business running while protecting Florida’s natural resources.

Nixon Farms was an early adopter of Best Management Practices (BMPs), having used practices such as no-till to reduce erosion and improve soil health from the early days of their operation. Other effective BMPs implemented include fertilizing with variable rate irrigation and using GPS in order to precisely apply when and exactly where nutrients are needed.

Additional BMPs implemented have included terraces, grass waterways and filters located throughout the fields. In addition, conservation tillage is used to prevent soil erosion and nutrient runoff. Nixon also plants and rotates with cover crops, such as wheat and soybeans. These are practical covers used between growing seasons to lock in moisture and improve soil health.

In regard to leadership, Nixon currently serves on the Farm Service Agency committee. He is also on the Okaloosa County Farm Bureau Board of Directors serving as Vice-President.

Florida Farm Bureau is honored to present Shannon Nixon and family, of Nixon Farms, with a 2019 CARES designation and sign for their continued efforts to protect our natural resources.
