ABOUT C & B FARMS

Charles Obern, owner of C & B Farms in Clewiston has produced specialty conventional and organic vegetables with a major focus
on environmental stewardship since 1986. By implementing Best Management Practices since 2002, Obern has been able to accomplish his goals of managing water and nutrient use as well as protecting local water quality.

Some of the most effective BMPs implemented include two tailwater recovery systems that reuse storm water for irrigation, providing an 80% water savings.  Multiple water retention areas capture water from growing areas and filter out excessive nutrients, preventing runoff.  In doing so, Obern has reduced Phosphorus runoff by 60%.  He has also reduced Phosphorus discharge by 92% after installing a treatment area for farm water discharge.  Other BMPs, such as man- made wetlands, protect water quality and also provide habitats for native wildlife.  Obern proudly hosts the Audubon Society annually for the Christmas bird count due to the thriving bird populations.

When he isn’t working to protect Florida’s environment, Obern is actively involved with FDACS’ technology committee, Southwest Florida’s vegetable advisory committee and the Climate change committee.  He has also been active with the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association board, Florida Farm Bureau fruit and vegetable advisory committee, and South Florida Water Management District advisory board.

To add to his accolades as an outstanding environmental steward, Florida Farm Bureau is honored to present Charles Obern and family with a 2019 CARES
designation and sign.
