Wild Boar Farm, Santa Rosa County
Burlin and Ann Findley own and operate Wild Boar Farm in Santa Rosa, Florida. It originated in 1972 and is a 3rd generation farm proudly producing cotton, peanuts, corn, and produce. Wild Boar Farm is a family-run business with members of the family having an active role in the prosperity of the farm. Wild Boar Farm has implemented BMPs for the past 15 years. BMPs are a set of guidelines that advise producers on how to manage the water, nutrient, and pesticides they are using to reduce agriculture’s impact on the state’s natural resources. Some of the BMPs that have been implemented include GPS guided tractor systems, swath control to sprayers, grid soil sampling, cover crops, strip till and no tilling. Cover crops are planted primarily to manage soil erosion, soil fertility, soil quality, water, weeds, pests, and diseases. These practices ensure that the land will remain productive and viable for future generations. Findley is involved in his local community as a member of the Mount Carmel Methodist Church, and vice chair of Blackwater Soil & Water District for over 20 years. He is also the first Vice President of the AFCD and NACD Soil Health Champion from Florida. He has served as the vice chair for the Three Rivers and Southeastern Resource Conservation & Development Council. When asked why they think it is important to protect the environment, Findley responded, “If we do not protect our environment, the quality of life that we enjoy will not be here for us or our descendants.”
